Time + Tradition

We study traditional building materials and planting practices of Hawai’i. In doing so, we recognize and respect the beauty of natural materials found here in our home. With this, we seek to craft landscapes that honor land practices of the past to create enduring landscapes of the future.

At Ka’u Forest Farm, we crafted a landscape sourced wholly from local materials, engaging local sawmillers and masons alike. We sourced all ‘Ohi’a wood from moku Ka’u and all stones from the site itself. A six-foot, dry-laid stone wall frames in a custom ‘Ohi’a sawmilled bench, adjacent to a rainwater-fed lo’i patch.

Competence + Care

We possess a wide-ranging set of land-based design & management skills, from ornamental planting plans to agricultural management techniques. We imbue each project with the due care that is required with the responsibility of engaging, designing with, and managing the natural resources of our islands.

At Hamakua Farm Estate, we worked closely with our clients to draft a comprehensive mixed agricultural-conservation-ornamental master plan to rehabilitate this 10-acre site of former sugarcane. In it, we incorporated ornamental allées lining productive orchards, crop fields, and native tree plantings.

Balance + Beauty

We recognize that land engagements can accomplish many goals simultaneously, such as conservation, production, and enjoyment. We find the balance of multiple landscape outcomes can produce beautiful results.

At Chateau de Courances, Dominic Riolo MLA (Hawai’i Landscape & Planning owner/operator) was lucky enough to work alongside the farmers, gardeners, and foresters of this landscape. There, he collaborated with the landscape managers of Cheateau de Courances to understand and contribute to the multifaceted agricultural, forestry, and ornamental components of this landscape. He has brought this knowledge to Hawai’i Landscape & Planning and seeks to make manifest the beauty of balanced landscape outcomes here at home in Hawai’i.
